Project Case Study
 McCownGordon and Architects Atelier will be in-charge of constructing the 14,000 square-foot grocery store downtown in the existing parking lot of 5th and Minnesota. This is the first grocery store to the area and the community has played a large role in the aesthetics and design of the building.
Although this a new construction project there are challenges with the existing conditions. Excavation was more than originally thought due to the unsuitable soil. To counteract these conditions the team brought in new compact soil. Structurally the building was erected with structural steel, masonry and glass building skin. Due to the poor conditions of the surrounding area the city has also asked the team to redo the sidewalks, parking lot, and water tanks to help with runoff and drainage.
Although LEED certifications were not required for this project the team is installing storm water tanks to help with water runoff. These amenities are proven beneficial as employees are getting trained in and because they’re now able to teach residents of the community safe ways to cook as well.
Included in the building is a food prep station with walk in coolers, café, small residential kitchen and classroom to teach nutrition, and cooking classes as well. With the addition of the below grade loading dock it allows smooth access to and from the kitchen and supply shelves so that employees can keep them properly stocked.
