The project included modifying and upgrading the elevators to service the two new floors and the penthouse. This vertical expansion at on top an active hospital clinic space.
Moisture control was critical as we had to keep the existing roof in place and protected while we build upon it. Our team coordinated closely with Children’s Mercy staff to determine when we could do noisier work. Our team responded quickly if Children’s Mercy staff had something come up in their schedule that needed less noise. For other times, we mitigated noise impacts to allow for clinic procedures to continue to take place as scheduled.
This expansion changed the building to a high rise which required upgrading building code and fire walls throughout the building to stay up to code. This required a collaborative phasing plan with the Children’s Mercy Hospital. This vertical expansion was in high traffic area, adjacent to the main hospital entrance and vehicles driving next to expansion to access parking garage. Our team understood the need for vehicular and pedestrian traffic control and took special precautions on keeping everyone safe.
