Improving Lives, One Story at a Time

When three clients became part of a life-saving story

Our mission statement, “we exist to improve lives”, has never rung truer than it does for Dustin Burns, SVP of technology and business solutions.

Seventeen years ago, Dustin’s nephew was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, a rare and life-threatening congenital heart condition. At just six months old, he underwent his first open-heart surgery. During countless hospital stays, Dustin’s sister, a single mother, found support and stability at the Ronald McDonald House.

There is a powerful full-circle moment in that story. The Ronald McDonald Longfellow House was one of the very first jobsites Dustin set up for McCownGordon back in 2005. At the time, he could not have known how deeply personal that project would become. Years later, he felt an overwhelming sense of pride knowing that his work directly supported his sister and nephew during one of the most difficult seasons of their lives.

Fast forward 16 years and that sense of pride only deepened. Unfortunately, Dustin’s nephew found himself back in the ICU, this time in desperate need of a heart transplant. On Valentine’s Day 2024, the call finally came. They had a heart. Thanks to the expertise and coordination of Midwest Transplant Network, the transplant was successfully performed at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

In that moment, three McCownGordon clients became an inseparable part of Dustin’s personal story. Children’s Mercy, Midwest Network Transplant and Ronald McDonald House, alongside countless doctors and nurses, helped save his nephew’s life.

Today, his nephew is thriving. He can run. He can play. He can simply be a teenager.
