Kansas Health Foundation Renovation

Project Case Study
The Kansas Health Foundation renovated its downtown Wichita building to more effectively showcase its mission to enhance the health and well-being of every Kansan. Through a design-build partnership, McCownGordon and Shelden Architecture worked alongside the owner to understand their project goals and develop a tailored plan to reflect their mission in a meaningful way.

The project included constructing a new atrium entrance with distinct wayfinding, creating updated incubation areas for strategic partners, and redesigning the interior to increase natural light and foster a more welcoming atmosphere. A heavy solid oak staircase was replaced by an open concept monumental staircase with glass handrail. Limestone authentic to Kansas was used as seating elements and accents throughout the building and vestibule to enhance the “Kansas” feeling. The reception desk was accented with a waterfall edge solid surface top with a profile of the Kansas River cut into the free edge. In the new breakroom, a 12-foot live edge table appears to float around an existing column. Two hospitality bars provide refreshments for staff and guests. New sitting areas in the vestibule and courtyard offer breakout spaces for conference attendees and staff.

The space features unique design elements and graphics throughout the building that echo the organization’s mission. Behind the scenes, HVAC and plumbing systems were modernized to reduce maintenance requirements, while audiovisual systems ensure seamless virtual communication.
