University of Iowa Medical Center University (UIHC), a university-based medical center, combines research and education with a community hospital. To address current demand and respond to anticipated future healthcare needs, UIHC is renovating and expanding 30,000 square feet for additional postpartum care.

This project supports the increasing volume of deliveries in the region and the goals of the UIHC comprehensive masterplan. The renovated area will feature state-of-the-art post-partum rooms and staff support spaces, including locker rooms, on-call respite suites, offices and a conference space.

To accommodate work in the fully operational facility, the project team collaborated with labor and delivery, NICU and existing post partum spaces to align work throughout the multiple phases to facilitate the growth. As the project has progressed, the team continues to routinely evaluate upcoming work and inform staff of any potential disruptions.

In addition to the interior renovation, this project involves complex upgrades substantial chilled water capacity upgrades and electrical infrastructure improvements to adequately and safely serve the entire John PappaJohn Pavillion for future growth and expanded programming planned within UIHC’s primary Hospital.
