Interior mural in Wichita Patrol East Substation built by McCownGordon Construction.

This new facility includes a public reception area, administrative offices, a short-term holding area, a community policing room, gear and equipment storage, locker rooms and a fitness area. McCownGordon collaborated with Tessere for this build which includes a public art component in the building’s design.

The new Substation features a distinctive design due to its thorough security measures. The building’s public entrance was protected by bulletproof glass separating visitors from reception staff. Externally, large boulders were incorporated into the landscape design, instead of conventional bollards, to prevent vehicles from colliding with the building. This strategic design choice enhanced the facility’s security while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.
